"Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it's got about 18 million cracks in it... and the light is shining through like never before, filling us all with the hope and the sure knowledge that the path will be a little easier next time. That has always been the history of progress in America. Think of the suffragists who gathered at Seneca Falls in 1848 and those who kept fighting until women could cast their votes."
Hillary Clinton, Washington D.C., June 7, 2008
August 26th of each year is designated in the United States as Women's Equality Day. In 1971, Bella Abzug instituted Women's Equality Day, commemorating the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Women’s Suffrage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave U.S. women full voting rights in 1920. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world's first women's rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York.
Women's Equality Day is our kick-off event for 2008-2009 Programs and begins our AAUW membership drive, to culminate at our Membership event on Sept. 21, 2008. Twenty-one female elected officials in Solano County are invited, to honor their civic accomplishments. There will be a program, an exhibit highlighting "Timeline for Equality;" a voter registration table, a membership table, and a resource table.

Creative Women's Symposium: Sunday, September 14th from 3-5 PM at Arts Benicia. The Symposium is produced by the Creative Women Symposium Committee, which consists of Arts Benicia, the Benicia-Vallejo Branch of AAUW, and the League of Women Voters.
The theme of this year’s program is: CREATIVITY - Culture at the crossroads of the abstract and the concrete - If we can't see it, hear it, say it, smell it, taste it - what is it and why is it important?”
Ruth Saxton, Professor of Literature at Mills College, will again moderate and present our introduction. For those of you who have attended the Symposium in the past, you already know that Ruth is an interesting and engaging speaker. Joining her on the podium will be Kim Anno, Professor of Painting and Department Chair, California College of Art, Oakland, and Maestro David Ramadanoff, Conductor, Vallejo Symphony. David presented to our AAUW Branch several years ago – he too is a talented presenter who energizes the audience with his enthusiasm for music.

Tech Trek Fundraiser:
The Tech Trek Science Camp was developed to encourage girls finishing the 7th grade to explore the fields of math and science. The Benicia Vallejo Branch of AAUW has a tradition of sending girls to the camp. In 2007 five girls were sent to Mills College for one week in July. Parents contribute a $50.00.donation. With everyone's help, AAUW hopes to send five in 2008.
A record 620 girls attended Tech Trek 2007! AAUW branches in California continue to support greater numbers of eighth grade girls at Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls. All sites were again filled in 2007. The record 620 students had the experience of living on a college campus and spending a week doing hands-on science and math.
What do girls do at Tech Trek?
-
do hands-on science projects
-
experience field trips
-
meet with women in science or math careers.
They eat meals together in a campus cafeteria, play sports, participate in activities in the dorm and have the chance to meet girls from many communities.
Who can attend Tech Trek?
Currently applications from girls with an interest in science, mathematics, and technology are being reviewed by the Tech Trek committee. Students who can follow directions, enjoy new settings and people, and work well in groups are great candidates. Once nominated, the girls are interviewed and finalists write a short essay. Parents are included in the process.
Tech Trek is a program unique to the California Division of AAUW in its tenth year. The first week long camp was held at Stanford University. This year six campuses will participate
