"They used to give us a day - it was called International Women's Day.  In 1975, they gave us a year, the Year of the Woman. Then, from 1975 to 1985, they gave us a decade, the Decade of the Woman.  I said at the time, who knows, if we behave, they may let us into the whole thing.  Well, we didn't behave, and here we are."

U.S. Representative, Bella Abzug (D-NY)

August 26th of each year is designated in the United States as Women's Equality Day. In 1971, Bella Abzug instituted Women's Equality Day, commemorating the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Women’s Suffrage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave U.S. women full voting rights in 1920. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world's first women's rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York. The observance of Women's Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women's continuing efforts toward full equality.

Although we've seen women make great strides, there is still much to be accomplished to achieve parity in all fields of endeavor. Until we see an equal number of women in public office, and one finally as Commander in Chief, women reaching pay equity, equal opportunity and respect in the workforce and education, full control over their reproductive decisions and equal partnerships at home, there is still much work left to do. These equity issues are the heart and soul of our AAUW mission.

Women's Equality Day is our kick-off event for 2009-2010 Programs and begins our AAUW membership drive, to culminate at our Membership event in September.

Participants this year are Camille Minichino (a.k.a. Margaret Grace), Claire M. Johnson, Ann Parker, and Penny Warner.  These successful authors have produced many individual volumes and series of books featuring murder and mayhem.

Claire M. Johnson, a former pastry chef, has recently published her second foot-related mystery. Her website is www.rouxmorgue.com

There are eight novels in Camille Minichino's periodic table mystery series, and her new thrillers include her lifelong hobby of collecting miniatures.  She is currently on the faculty of Golden Gate University, San Francisco, and on the staff of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Ms. Minichino is a retired physicist who keeps very busy with writing and teaching. She has two mystery series - the Dollhouse Mysteries and the Periodic Table Mysteries. Her main website is www.minichino.com

Tech Trek

The Tech Trek Science Camp was developed to encourage girls finishing the 7th grade to explore the fields of math and science.  The Benicia-Vallejo Branch of AAUW has a tradition of sending girls to the camp.  In 2007 and 2008, five girls were sent each year to Mills College for one week in July.  Parents contribute a $50 donation  A record 620 girls attended Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls in 2007 and had the experience of living on a college campus and spending a week doing hands-on science and math.  Girls are currently being recommended by their teachers.

What do girls do at Tech Trek?

  • do hands-on science projects

  • experience field trips

  • meet with women in science or math careers.

They eat meals together in a campus cafeteria, play sports, participate in activities in the dorm and have the chance to meet girls from many communities.

Who can attend Tech Trek?

Soon, applications from girls with an interest in science, mathematics, and technology will be reviewed by the Tech Trek Committee.  Students who can follow directions, enjoy new settings and people, and work well in groups are great candidates.  Once nominated by one of their school teachers, the girls submit an application form and essay.  The Committee selects a group of prospective campers from among the applicants, and they are interviewed by AAUW members.  From these applicants, a the final group of participants are selected. Parents are included in the process.

Tech Trek is a program unique to the California Division of AAUW and is in its 11th year.  The first week-long camp was held at Stanford University.  This year, six college campuses will participate.
